Chapter 9.   Migrating to Visual C++ .NET

Programmers now have many options because they are free to work in any language of their choice, and they are assured of great interoperability with modules in any other language. .NET Framework is a significant step forward toward software engineering utopia because the long-cherished dream of many languages and many platforms is finally taking an identifiable shape. The CLR is Microsoft's implementation of the CLI (a Microsoft initiative ratified by ECMA as international standard, ECMA-335). Efforts are under way for the UNIX and Linux implementation as well.

We can reasonably foresee a future when all the code seamlessly integrates with the .NET Framework. But until that happens, we have to confront the issues of interoperability or invest in efforts to migrate the existing code. This chapter has dealt extensively with various scenarios and provided guidelines for each step.

In this chapter we have seen how migration and interoperability could be achieved in the .NET Framework and the relative advantages and disadvantages of migration and interoperability. We have covered in detail some specific migration and interoperability issues and also worked some solutions for these problems. Detailed discussion about topics such as exception and COM interoperability will give users an appropriate insight into them.
