Basic Statistics

The main page provides three separate statistics. The first is a breakdown of the Web browsers used to visit your site. PHP-Nuke 7.3 recognizes six types of Web browser:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE)

  • Netscape (which includes Mozilla and spin-offs like FireFox)

  • Opera

  • Konqueror

  • Lynx

  • Search engine robots or spiders

Also included is an Unknown category for other browsers. PHP-Nuke recognizes browsers based on the agent string sent along by every Web browser when requesting a page from your site.

How is this information useful to you? Suppose you want to create some fancy new page that uses the <MARQUEE> HTML tag to make a section of scrolling text. That tag is a feature invented by Microsoft for Internet Explorer (IE); while some other browsers do support it, most don't. Checking your site statistics, you might see that 30 percent of your users are using a browser other than IE, meaning that those 30 percent might be unable to properly view your fancy new page. Knowing what software your users are relying on can help you make these important design decisions.

Next, PHP-Nuke lists the percentage of users using a specific operating system. Keep in mind that some browsers, even IE, run on multiple operating systems; knowing what operating systems your users rely on can help you make other important design decisions. It might also affect decisions about your site's content. For example, if you run a computer gaming site and realize that a quarter of your users are running Linux or some UNIX variant, you might want to start including appropriate coverage of games for those operating systems.

The operating system is identified to PHP-Nuke in the same user agent string that the Web browser is. PHP-Nuke recognizes the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows

  • Linux variants (all lumped under "Linux")

  • Apple Macintosh

  • FreeBSD (a UNIX variant)

  • SunOS (a UNIX variant)

  • IRIX (a UNIX variant)

  • BeOS

  • IBM OS/2

  • AIX (a Unix variant)

And, of course, there's an Unknown category for everything else. I've found that PHP-Nuke has about an 80 percent success rate at properly recognizing the operating system; the failures aren't PHP-Nuke's fault at all, but rather the fault of some browsers to send a proper user agent string and the fault of some operating systems to consistently identify themselves.

The basic stats wind up with miscellaneous information, including the following:

  • Items in Web links
