Chapter 3. IIS and Virtual Directories

To save yourself time, you can skip this chapter if you do not plan to implement any of the template or schema code examples included later in the book, or if you do not want to test your code. Skipping this chapter won't affect your reading of the rest of the book, but you may have a difficult time understanding some of the concepts presented. (I work with a person who has unbelievable visualization skills, so go for it if you can.)

Again, I assume that you have some familiarity with Microsoft IIS because instruction on the management of this software is beyond the scope of this book.

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Virtual directories and how they apply to Internet Information Server (IIS)

  • System requirements for Virtual Directory Management on IIS

  • The (graphical) Virtual Directory Management Utility

  • The (programmatic) Virtual Directory Management object model
