Working with Keyboard Shortcuts

As you gain experience and familiarity with Word, you might find it more useful to use keyboard shortcuts for many commands rather than lifting your hands from the keyboard to use your mouse with the toolbars or menus . Most commands are assigned a default shortcut key combination, but you can edit these defaults to make the most frequently used commands easier to remember, or to suit your preferences for typing speed (i.e.: some keystrokes are easier to replicate while maintaining typing speed than others).

Assign Keyboard Shortcuts

Click the Tools menu _' and then click Customize.

Click Keyboard.

Click the Save Changes In list arrow, and then select the current document name , or the template that you want to save the keyboard changes.

Click the category containing the command that you want your shortcut key to trigger.

Click the command you want. Any keys that have already been assigned are displayed in the Current Keys box.

Assign the shortcut key combination you want in the Press New Shortcut Key text box.

Press Enter or click Assign.

Click Close.

Click Close.

Display Keyboard Shortcuts in ScreenTips

Click the Tools menu _' and then click Customize.

Click the Options tab.

Click the Show ScreenTips On Toolbars and the Show Shortcut Keys In ScreenTips check boxes to select them.

Click Close.

Print a List of Shortcut Keys

Click the Tools menu _' point to Macro, and then click Macros.

Click the Macro In list arrow, and then click Word Commands.

Double-click ListCommands.

Click the Current Menu And Keyboard Settings option.

Click OK.

A multi-page table appears with all of the keyboard shortcuts.

Click the File menu _' click Print, choose your printing options, and then click OK.
