Summary

In this chapter you learned that:

  • q MOSS site templates are more advanced than WSS site templates.

  • q It is possible to change a number of settings on the portal using only a web client, such as Internet Explorer.

  • q SharePoint stores all its site templates, also known as site definitions, in the 12 hive (i.e., <disk>:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\template\Site Templates).

  • q The 12 hive also contains all the configuration files, such as images, layout files, styles, and .aspx code files.

  • q Download free Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Language Template Packs when you want to create WSS sites in other languages than the default one.

  • q SharePoint uses LCID - Locale Identifier codes - when referring to language-specific features in SharePoint.

  • q When adding new WSS language template packs, new LCID folders are created in several places in the 12 hive.

  • q The chrome of a page is the navigation parts, top menus, logo and Quick Launch bar.

  • q SharePoint 2007 uses the ASP.NET 2.0 feature called Master Pages to control the chrome.

  • q Add a custom Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) file if you want to modify some parts of the page without modifying the default CSS files.

  • q Instead of deleting default subsites in the intranet, you can hide them from the navigation and Quick Launch bar. You can also set permissions and remove read access from users who should not be able to see a specific site.

  • q Use the Content Query Web Part to display information in other sites, such as lists and libraries.

  • q Use the tree view instead of the Quick Launch bar if you want a hierarchical tree view of a site and its current subsites.

  • q Use links to open file folders, files, or create Outlook e-mail messages.

  • q Create custom site definitions when you need to have full control over a site's look and feel.

  • q "Ghosted" sites are sites that use a shared site definition stored in the file system.

  • q "Unghosted" sites are sites that are stored completely in the SQL database, both the site definition and its content.

  • q Avoid modifying a site with SharePoint Designer if you don't want unghosted sites.

  • q Reset an unghosted site to ghosted by using the command "Reset to site definition" on the Site Settings page for the site.

In the next chapter, you will learn more about the SharePoint Designer and how to create Master Pages and page layout files.
