Critical Skill 1.5 Install MySQL on Linux

Its easy to install MySQL on a Linux OS. In order to download the files, you will need a Linux browser, an FTP program, or access to a Windows browser and FTP program.

Unlike with Windows installations, Linux users rarely need to install MyODBC (the ODBC designed by MySQL). MySQLs manual notes that ColdFusion is the only commonly used program that requires the MyODBC interface.

Before you install the database on your computer, make sure you have enough room for it. It can be difficult to predict how large a database may eventually grow. MySQL needs around 100 megabytes (MB) to install. Beginners are recommended to have at least 150MB to 200MB of free space before running the installation process. As long as you have around 200MB, you can start your database. If necessary, you can easily expand your database and change the settings for your database later.
