Chapters 2 through 11 developed models and investigated the performance of different types of LANs based on a series of assumptions concerning LAN traffic. Chapter 12 focuses on how you can turn such assumptions into reality using different monitoring tools to obtain statistical information of key importance for considering techniques to enhance the performance of your organization's network.
In Chapter 12 focuses on the operation and utilization of two network monitoring tools. Both tools operate at layer 2 (data-link layer) and layer 3 (network layer) of the OSI Reference Model. As we discuss the use of these tools, we will examine many of their features that can be used to provide insight into network activity that can be used to enhance LAN performance.
