Editing in Edit Mode

[ LiB ]

The second edit mode for the sequencer, simply titled Edit mode, gives a more precise way to edit your performances . The Arrange mode is typically used for building arrangements out of groups, using them like building blocks. Edit mode is primarily used when you want to edit the information within those blocks.

Putting the Sequencer in Edit Mode

To change the sequencer from its default Arrange mode to Edit mode:

Working with Lanes

Unlike the Arrange mode, which shows an overview of the groups on all tracks, the Edit mode shows only the information that is on the currently selected track. The track will be divided into separate lanes, each lane showing relevant information for the track, depending on which device it is connected to. Some lanes are used to edit a specific devicee.g., the Rex lane is used to edit a track connected to a Dr:rex Loop Player.

The Lanes

As mentioned, there are various types of lanes. Some are used for specific devices, and some have several uses.

Enabling Lane Views

To view a lane you must enable the Key Lane view.

NOTE

This exercise demonstrates how to enable the Key Lane view; however, the same method is used to enable all other lane views. Click on the appropriate lane icon to enable that lane's view.

NOTE

Each device has its own set of default lane viewsfor example, a track connected to a Dr:rex device will show only the Rex lane and the Velocity lane, since the others are not relevant to the Dr:rex device.

Controller Lanes

The Controller lane allows you to edit the automation of a device that you may have recorded to a track.

To view the Controller lane:

Because each device has a different set of parameters that can be automated, you will need to choose which controller you want to view and edit.

To view all controllers:

You can also select from a list the specific Controller lanes that you wish to view and edit.

NOTE

In the Available Controllers Lanes menu, an asterisk will be placed next to each Controller lane that is being used in the track.

Setting the Lane's Grid

The Snap function can also be used on information in Edit mode.

Editing the Tracks

Using the lanes, you can edit all the information on a track. You can even add or remove information manually.

Drawing Notes

In the lanes, you can use the Pencil tool to draw in note information.

NOTE

The length of the note you draw depends on the value set in the grid size setting. To create a note longer than the size set by the grid, click and hold while dragging the mouse to draw a note. This way you can create a note of the desired length. The note will still snap to the grid value as you drag it.

NOTE

With several lanes open at one time, the Edit mode may become crowded; it's a good idea to disable all unneeded views.

Deleting Notes

NOTE

Editing note information drawing, resizing, moving, and deletingworks the same way in the Key lane, the Rex lane, and the Drum lane.

Drawing Velocity Changes

You can also edit the note's velocity information. Velocity, you will recall, is the MIDI value that captures how hard you strike a note on your MIDI keyboard.
