Using CompTIA's Exam Software Effectively

A well-known principle when taking exams is to first read over the entire exam from start to finish while answering only those questions you feel absolutely sure of. The next time around, you can delve into the more complex questions. Knowing how many such questions you have left helps you spend your exam time wisely.

Fortunately, the CompTIA exam software makes this approach easy to implement. At the top of each question, in the left corner, is a check box that permits you to mark the question for later review.

Marking questions makes review easier, but you can return to any question if you are willing to click the Forward or Back button located across the bottom of the screen.

As you read each question, if you answer only those you are sure of, and mark those you are unsure of for review, you can continue working through a dwindling list of questions as you answer the less complex ones first.

There is at least one potential benefit to reading the exam before answering the trickier questions: Sometimes, information stated in later questions will actually answer earlier questions. Other times, information you read in later questions might spark your memory about facts or behaviors that also will help with earlier questions. No matter how you look at it, you will come out ahead if you hold off answering those questions you are not absolutely sure of.

Work through the marked questions until you are certain of all your answers or until you know you will run out of time. If questions remain unanswered, you will want to go through them quickly and guess. Leaving a question unanswered means you won't receive credit for it, and a guess has at least a chance of being correct.

At the very end of your exam period, you are better off guessing than leaving questions unanswered.
