Quick Migration Overview

Quick Migration Overview

Before you begin, don't worry about uninstalling StarOffice 5.2. 5.2 and 6.0 and OpenOffice.org all coexist happily together.

However, uninstall StarOffice 6.0 Beta before you do anything else.

The migration from StarOffice 5.2 to OpenOffice.org is generally pretty simple:

  • You need to be on StarOffice 5.2, not a prior version.

  • StarOffice 5.2 and 6.0, and OpenOffice.org 1.0 all co-exist peacefully on the same machine. So you don't need to uninstall 5.2, though you do need to upgrade to 5.2 if you're on 5.1, and you need to uninstall the StarOffice 6.0 Beta if you've got it.

  • When you install StarOffice 6.0 and OpenOffice.org 1.0, you get to choose to import personal data like your name (which shows up in notes and other places), so that's taken care of automatically.

  • The new document converter (File > AutoPilot > Document Converter) will convert all your 5.2 documents to 6.0 at once.

This section covers specifics on how to deal with details of your migration that might not go smoothly such as UNIX printers, or migrating StarOffice 5.2 features that don't exist anymore, like Mail.

Removing StarOffice 6.0 Beta Software Before Migrating

You must remove the 6.0 Beta release of StarOffice before you install the latest release of the software, or migrate.

UNIX

To invoke the setup for the deleting the software, open a terminal window.

Type cd , then press Return. Type ls and press Return. This will list the files and directories in your Home directory. Find the directory you installed StarOffice 6.0 beta in. This is typically staroffice6.0 or StarOffice6 . Change to this StarOffice directory by typing:

cd

office60beta_directory

Press Return, then type:

./setup

This calls the Staroffice setup program. Select the Remove option and choose to Delete all files.

If this does not work, edit the ~/sversionrc file and remove this line:

StarOffice 6.0=file:///

office60beta_path

Save the file.

Type rm -rf / office60beta_path in a terminal window to delete the StarOffice 6.0 installation directory.

Windows

Right click on the StarOffice beta Quickstarter in your taskbar (A butterfly in the lower right corner) and select Exit Quickstarter. Now choose Start > Programs > StarOffice 6.0 Beta > Setup. Remove the program and choose to delete all files.

Note

Although the Delete all files option states that it will delete all user -created documents, itwell, it doesn't. Not checking this option leaves behind a lot of junk files in the directory, including files that will make the final installation crash when initiating the presentation module for the first time.

Migrating 5.2 Personal Data and Setup Options

When you install, you are prompted to migrate personal data. You probably want to mark this option. The data migrated to the current installation includes:

  • Text document, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and user preferences. This includes files for colors and hatches like . sob and . soh files.

  • Any user settings for user information: AutoCorrection, Autotext, backup preferences, backup directory, Internet (Proxy) settings, gallery, plugins, templates, wordbooks, your standard work (data) folder ( copied to your home directory for Solaris users and the My Documents folder for Windows users), and user dictionaries.

  • To keep your customized menu, keyboard, statusbar and toolbar configurations, locate the . cfg file ( office52/user/config/soffice.cfg ). Load it into the current release of the program by choosing Tools > Configuration > Load.

The following user preferences and data are not migrated automatically and should be updated manually: math symbols, paths settings, module settings in the Tools > Options windows, bookmarks, Calc addins, and basic macros.

It does not migrate email data or preferences; see Migrating Your StarOffice 5.2 Mail to Another Mail Program on page 47.
