Inserting an Object Created in Any Application

Feel like inserting a new Illustrator graphic into your Writer document? If you have Illustrator, that is. For Illustrator or scores of other formats, just insert the object and create it in the native application. This section also covers how to insert an empty OpenOffice.org file.

Inserting an Existing Object Created in an External Program

  1. Choose Insert > Object > OLE Object.

  2. Keep the Create New item selected, then Further Objects at the bottom of the Object Type field.

  3. The Insert Object will appear. Select Create From File.

  4. A browse field will appear. Click Browse and select the file.

  5. Click OK.

Inserting a New Object Created in an External Program

  1. Choose Insert > Object > OLE Object.

  2. Keep the Create New item selected, then Further Objects at the bottom of the Object Type field.

  3. The Insert Object will appear. Keep Create New selected.

  4. The lists displays scores of formats like Acrobat, Photoshop, Bitmap Image, Illustrator document, and even Yahoo!WebCam Viewer. Select a format that you can create on your computer (if you don't have Illustrator, selecting Illustrator won't do any good).

  5. Click OK.

  6. The application that you operating system associates with that type of file will open . Create the image or document you want and close the window. The object will appear in your document.

Inserting an Icon That Opens an Inserted Object When Clicked

Complete Inserting a New Object Created in an External Program on page 299 or Inserting an Existing Object Created in an External Program on page 298. In the Insert Object window, select the Display as Icon option.

Once you've inserted the object, you can double-click the icon to open the inserted object.

Inserting a New Empty OpenOffice.org Object

  1. Choose Insert > Object > OLE Object.

  2. Keep the Create New item selected, then select the correct application in the list below. Click OK.

  3. Click in the object to create it; the application-specific object bar will appear with the object and you can edit it if you want.
