Chapter 11. Configuration Management Roles

The roles in this category are centralized and specialized configuration management roles, typically supporting more than one organizational unit, if not an entire company. One or more of these roles may also be connected to a specific organizational unit, such as a large project.

The roles are filled formally in companies of a certain maturity level, but no matter what the level, it's always a good idea to consider where these responsibilities should be placed. If this is not done, this work will either be carried on informally, possibly as "invisible" work not appearing in any plan or accounting of time, or it will fall between two jobs not being done at all.

These roles do not have to be fulltime jobs, but they shouldn't be less than 25% of a person's time, since other duties might interfere with doing a proper job. In highly automated configuration management systems, the workload for some roles may have to be minimal but should not be underestimated.
