Data warehouse performance and management is a very broad subject. This chapter simply addressed performance-related issues very specific to SAP BW: data load and data access. In this chapter, you learned how to optimize data loads in SAP BW and how to build aggregates to improve query performance.
Sizing any data warehouse is not an easy task. I have never seen two data warehouses that are alike; sizing is always very specific to a customer's analytical needs. In this chapter, you also learned how to size an SAP BW environment and identify areas-such as memory, processors, and disk I/O requirements for SAP BW-that play a direct role in overall SAP BW performance. Often, hardware vendors take advantage of their architectures. For example, the Compaq Alpha server exploits a very large memory architecture to improve SAP BW performance. However, I advise you to consult with SAP and partner hardware vendors to provide the latest SAP BW benchmark results so you have a good high-performance data warehouse solution. A few vendor Web sites are listed Appendix A.
