B.4. Downloads One of the coolest features of the Web is that there's so much great stuff out there for you to grab and play with, try out, or use. As you can see in [click here], Firefox allows you to control how acquiring that stuff works. Let's take a look at the full range of Firefox's Downloads options:
- Download Folder
-
This determines where downloaded files go by default. It's covered in Chapter 2.
- Download Manager
-
We looked at Firefox's Download Manager in Chapter 3. To set it up, check both "Show Download Manager window when a download begins" and "Close the Download Manager when all downloads are complete."
- File Types
-
This section shows you what Firefox will do when it encounters files on the Web, either when you click on a link or when a type of multimedia is embedded in a web page. If you want to change what Firefox does when you click on a link for a certain kind of file type (e.g., .DOC, .MPG, .MP3, or .MOV), first select the file type from the list provided, press Choose Action, and then make your choice from the Change Action window. Your choices are to open with a default application, open with a different application that you choose, or save the file to disk. Press OK to close the Change Action window, and your choice will now be used. If you click the Plug-Ins button, a window will open indicating if a plug-in is available for a particular file type. You can prevent a particular plug-in from kicking in when it spots a particular kind of file by unchecking the file type. Firefox will then download the file instead of attempting to play it with a plug-in. When you're done, press OK to close the Plug-Ins window. I discussed plug-ins in more depth in Chapter 4. Downloads are taken care of, so it's time to advance to the last section: Firefox's Advanced options. |
