Working with Dialog Boxes


You can use the following keyboard shortcuts to work with dialog boxes in Windows.

Shortcuts for Working with Standard Dialog Boxes

Click the default button in the dialog box

[Enter]

Click the Cancel button

[Esc]

Display the next tab of the dialog box

[Ctrl] - [Tab] , [Ctrl] - [Page{Down]

Display the previous tab

[Ctrl] - [Shift] - [Tab] , [Ctrl] - [Page{Up]

Close the dialog box

[Alt] - [F4]

Display a drop-down list

[F4]

Shortcuts for Working in Common Dialog Boxes

You can use the following shortcuts for taking actions from the keyboard in the Open dialog box, the Save As dialog box, and the Insert Picture dialog box.

Toggle the display of the Look In drop-down list

[F4]

Refresh the list of files

[F5]

Display the previous folder

[Alt] - [1]

This shortcut is the equivalent of clicking the Back button.

Display the parent folder of the current folder

[Alt] - [2]

This shortcut is the equivalent of clicking the Up button.

Close the dialog box and display your web search page in the default browser

[Alt] - [3]

This shortcut is the equivalent of clicking the Search the Web button.

Delete the selected file or folder

[Alt] - [4]

This shortcut is the equivalent of clicking the Delete button.

Create a new folder in the current folder

[Alt] - [5]

This shortcut is the equivalent of clicking the Create New Folder button.

Cycle to the next folder view

[Alt] - [6]

Press this shortcut one or more times to move from List view to Details view to Properties view to Preview, and then back to List view. This shortcut is the equivalent of choosing one of the view items from the View drop-down menu.

Display the Tools drop-down menu

[Alt] - [7] , [Alt] - [L]
