Capacity planning is the science of taking existing knowledge about resource requirements, and projecting future needs based on known changes to workload or environment. When companies plan a consolidation to move many servers to Linux running under z/VM, that infrastructure will have a great impact on the resource requirements of the z/VM system.
In this chapter, we discuss some of the choices in infrastructure, and the impact on capacity requirements. We describe capacity planning for the following subsystems:
