Mac OS should be kept up to date on all systems. When incremental OS releases are made availablefor example, from Mac OS 10.3.7 to 10.3.8those updates should be installed immediately. Major updates, from 10.2 to 10.3 or 10.4, should be tested and planned before installation.
Services for Macintosh should be installed on the SBS server when there are machines running both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 and earlier operating systems. This allows the workstations to share files on the server with ease.
When only Mac OS X-based workstations are on the network, do not use Services for Macintosh. Instead, configure the Mac workstations to connect to the existing SMB shares on the server.
If you are setting up a new SBS installation, do not use the .local top-level domain name. Instead, use .lan or .office or some other private domain name.
When configuring email access on the Macintosh platform, use IMAP instead of POP3. This is required for Entourage X Exchange integration and helps cut down on "lost" mail that is common when running multiple POP3 mail clients.
For tightest Exchange server integration, use Outlook 2001 for the mail client on Mac OS 9 and earlier machines. Entourage 2004 is the best tool to use for Mac OS X.
