66 About Preflighting

67 Preflighting a PDF

PDF/X stands for PDF Exchange and is a subset of the Adobe PDF file format. PDF/X eliminates many of the printing problems caused by color , font, and trapping variables . You can verify whether a document is PDF/Xcompliant by preflighting the document within Acrobat. If your document is not PDF/Xcompliant, you need to return to the original source document, make any necessary changes, and generate a new PDF.

1.
Preflight the Document

Open the PDF document in Acrobat. From the Advanced menu, select Preflight . In the Preflight dialog box, select any of the PDF/Xcompliant profiles. Click the Execute button.

After Acrobat runs the preflight profile on the document, the results are automatically displayed in the Results section. Click the plus sign next to each violation to see the specific instance where the rule was violated.

2.
Generate a Report

Click the Report command at the top of the Preflight dialog box. A Save As dialog box appears. Name the file and specify a location; then click the Save button. You can choose to save an overview or detailed version of the report.

3.
Correct the Original Source Document

Open the preflight report as well as the original source document. Make any necessary changes to the source document as detailed in the report. Save the source file and generate a new PDF document from it.

4.
Repeat Preflight

Return to step 1, open the updated PDF document, and preflight it using the same PDF/Xcompliant profile. Repeat this process until the document is PDF/Xcompliant.
