Now that you understand digital IDs, you can use a digital ID to apply a signature to your PDF file. By clicking the Signatures tab, you can create your own Signature field exactly where you want it on the PDF document. Create a blank Signature field and then digitally sign the document. If you need multiple signatures, create the blank Signature fields first; then send the document to those who you need to digitally sign the PDF document.

1.
Add a Signature to a PDF

In the Signatures tab, select Create a Blank Signature Field from the Options pop-up menu. Click the OK button to accept the instructions; then click and drag in the document window to define the size you want the Signature field to be. This launches the Digital Signature Properties dialog box. In this dialog box, you can change the look of the Signature field.

2.
Change the Appearance

In the Digital Signature Properties dialog box, you can change how the Signature field box looks. Add a colored border or shade the field altogether. You can also change the font style or color and specify whether you want the box to perform any actions when it is clicked.

In the Signed tab of the Digital Signature Properties dialog box you can select one of the following options: Nothing Happens When Signed, Mark As Read-only , or This Script Executes When Field Is Signed .

Click the Close button when you are satisfied with the looks of your Signature field.

3.
Sign the PDF

If necessary, click the Browse tool to select it and click your new Signature field. If the document is not certified, a warning dialog box pops up alerting you of this. Click the Continue Signing button to sign the document. The Apply Digital Signature - Digital ID Selection dialog box is launched.

4.
View Your Signature

Select the ID with which you want to sign the document and click OK to apply your digital signature. Enter your password for your digital ID. Select your reason for signing the document from the Reason for Signing Document pop-up menu. You are required to save the document to complete the process. Either select Sign and Save to overwrite the existing document or select Sign and Save As to give the document a different name or location. A dialog box appears to let you know the document was successfully signed.

TIP

If you always use the same digital ID, select Always Use This Digital ID in the Apply Digital Signature - Digital ID Selection dialog box. This saves you the step of having to select your digital ID each time you digitally sign a document.
