At the bottom of the document window are the page navigation controls. These controls include buttons to go from one page to another, as well as an indicator that shows the page you are currently viewing. The page numbers shown here refer to the actual page in the PDF document, which might not have any page numbers that were created for the document in the original authoring application. This is especially true of documents with front matter, such as a table of contents, copyright page, dedication, and so on. If the page number displayed by Acrobat does not match the internal document page numbers , it can cause confusion, especially when trying to refer to a particular page in discussions with other viewers of the PDF.

Acrobat lets you renumber as many different page ranges as necessary, as well as using different numbering styles, such as lowercase Roman numbering for front matter.

1.
Specify Page Range

Click the Pages tab on the left side of the document window to open the Pages panel. Click the Options menu at the top of the Pages panel and select Number Pages . This brings up the Page Numbering dialog box.

At the top of the dialog box, select either All or Selected (if you have a range of pages selected in the Pages panel). Or you can specify a range of pages in the From and To boxes.

2.
Choose Numbering Options

In the Numbering area of the Page Numbering dialog box, choose either Begin New Section or Extend Numbering Used in Preceding Section to Selected Pages . If you choose to begin a new section, select a numbering style (such as 1, 2, 3; A, B, C ; or i, ii, iii ) from the Style drop-down list. You can also specify a prefix for the page numbers (to have a section numbered Intro-1, Intro-2, Intro-3, and so on, for example) and at which number you want the page numbering to start.

3.
View the Results

Click the OK button at the bottom of the Page Numbering dialog box to apply the new settings to your document. Use the Previous Page and Next Page buttons at the bottom of the document window to navigate through your document; you'll see that Acrobat displays the document with the new page numbers. (It lists the "real" page numbers in parentheses, as well.)
