Summary

A laptop computer is a wonder of modern industrial design; it incorporates all the features and functions of a high-performance personal computer into a relatively lightweight portable package. Many laptop controls may have more than one function, so you should take the time to examine your own computer with the user's manual in one hand.

One of the most common controls on a laptop computer is an extra shift key called the Function (Fn) key that changes the performance of many other keys. The exact set of keys that the Fn key changes is different on each make and model of computer, but those keys usually have Fn printed on them in blue or some other contrasting color. Other features include the touchpad or pointing stick that replaces the mouse, and a set of indicator lights that tell you when certain functions are active.

Unlike desktop computers, the AC power supply for a laptop computer is a separate unit that connects to both an AC wall outlet and the laptop's power input connector. When the computer is connected to AC power, it automatically recharges the battery until the battery is at full capacity.

The inside of a laptop computer's case has much less space than a desktop case. Because of this, it's essential to move heat out of the laptop as efficiently as possible. Along with a metal plate inside the case, most laptop cases include air intake vents on one or two sides, and an exhaust vent on the bottom. Therefore, it's important to allow some free space underneath the computer; most laptop cases have feet that can do the job, as long as you don't place the computer on a soft surface like a bed or a couch.
