Summary

Windows includes several features and options that control the way your computer consumes electric power. The Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) scheme works with the power policies in individual device drivers to reduce the amount of power each device uses when the device is not in service. Windows also uses Power Schemes, specified in the Power Options dialog box, to specify the amount of idle time before the monitor and disk drives shut down and the entire computer enters either the standby or hibernation state.

Uninterruptible power supplies provide a battery backup that allows you to shut down your computer in an orderly manner when your AC power fails. The UPS tab in the Power Options window contains settings that specify exactly how a UPS responds to a power failure.

Finally, in certain specialized situations, replacing the conventional AC power supply in your desktop computer with a DC power supply can offer some significant benefits. However, a laptop or other portable is often the better solution to the same set of problems.
