Chapter 4. Playing Back and Viewing Your Media

I like to think of the Project panel as the container for all of your media. The Source Monitor is where you can view that media in detail and decide which portions you want to work with. As you'll see in the next chapter, the Timeline panel and Program Monitor are your virtual videotape or canvas where you arrange, manipulate, and create your edit.

With Premiere Pro 2.0, the Source Monitor and Program Monitor are now separate panels (Figures 4.1). In the Source Monitor, you open source material and pick the portions you want to incorporate into your sequence. In the Program Monitor, you open and view the sequences that you are editing. Although their buttons and transport controls are almost identical, the function of each window is quite different, as you'll see.
