Define Project Constraints (Process Notes 1.2.8)

Define the mandated constraints on the way that the product must be produced.

Look for real constraints (as distinct from opinions about how the problem should be solved):

  • Solution constraints: Mandated technology

  • Deadlines: Any known deadlines

  • Financial budget

  • Current system constraints

Each constraint should be testable. In other words, how will you know whether you have met the constraint?

For each project constraint, ask, "Why it is a constraint?" This question will help you distinguish between real project constraints and solutions posturing as constraints.

Refer to the Volere Requirements Specification Template for more guidance in writing constraints.
