DIRECTORIES

For the most part, directories such as Yahoo!, the Open Directory Project (http://dmoz.org/), IDB/Internet Directory for Botany (www.botany.net/IDB), Writers.net, the Middleeastdirectory.com, Questia.com (an online library), etc., use real people to compile their information and then supplement that information with a search engine. A directory-based search returns matches only when one is found either in a description submitted by the website owner or contained in a review.

Since directories are dependent upon humans for their listings, a website operator is required to submit a short description of his or her website. Then depending on certain (unnamed) criteria, an editor may then visit the submitted website and write a review. (A well designed website, with good content, is more likely to be chosen for review than a badly designed website or one with poor content.)

Changing your web pages has no effect on a directory listing. What will improve a listing with a search engine will not serve to improve a directory listing.

NOTE
The average time between your original submission to a search engine or directory and getting it into that service’s database is about five to eight weeks.
