WAN (Wide Area Network) –
A network that is geographically scattered with a broader structure than a LAN. It can be privately owned or leased, but the term usually implies public networks.
Web –
A subset of the Internet that in today’s world is accessed via a web browser.
Web address –
See Domain Name.
Web hosting service –
A third party that leases space on its web servers and use of its other hardware such as UPS, backup, its technical staff, etc., so the lessee’s website can be accessed over the Internet.
Weblog –
See Blog.
Web page –
A document on the World Wide Web that has its own unique URL (Uniform Resource Locator). Websites consist of any number of web pages.
Web page editor –
A plain text editor, such as Notepad for Windows offers a place to type in your HTML code so that you can post the file on your website. A more complicated editor can do just about everything for you (so there is no need to know HTML) just drag and drop text, images, etc. onto your page, and the editor writes the code.
Web Server –
A computer with data and specific software to operate a website.
Website –
Data residing on a computer, which has software running on it that allows the download and presentation of the data to another computer that is permanently connected to the Internet.
Whois –
A common Unix network function that queries databases for information about domain names, IP address assignments, and individual names.
WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) pronounced wiz-e-wig –
An application that enables you to see on the computer monitor exactly what will appear when the document is printed.
