Transport

As a relatively independent and open small island economy, Macao has long been restrained by the lack of natural conditions such as deep-water ports, and so has not been able to play a role compatible with its position as a free port. In order to rebuild its advantages, Macao has recently planned and successfully built a three- dimensional comprehensive transport system consisting of seaports, airport and an express highway .

Macao International Airport was completed in 1995, which has given the city a fast and convenient method of transport to reach the outside world. The airport has, to a certain extent, helped Macao rejuvenate its function as a free port. Macao is actively planning port facilities to accommodate even larger tonnage.

A modern land transportation system connecting Macao with the hinterland of the Pearl River Delta by rail and express highways is being planned. With the construction of the Guangzhou-Zhuhai-Macao express highway, Guangzhou-Zhuhai-Macao railway and the Lingdingyang Bridge connecting Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Macao across the harbour, Macao's transportation system will be greatly improved. Such improvements will bring Macao closer to the western part of the Pearl River Delta area and the mainland of China and expedite the process of integration between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.

With its advantages as a transportation hub consisting of sea, air and land and an integrated river-to-sea transport system upon completion of the construction of the passage connecting the Xijiang River to the sea, the constraints that have limited Macao's role as a free port for over 100 years will be completed eliminated in the not too distant future. Macao will rediscover its role as a free port and the economic, trade and investment ties between Macao and the mainland will be strengthened further, enhancing Macao's role as a 'bridge' and 'window' to China.
