Foreign trade

In 2000, the total foreign trade value of Zhanjiang City was US$1.16746 billion, an increase of 56.23 per cent over US$747.25 million in 1999. The contribution of export to this total was 32.42 per cent, although the total export value (US$378.43 million) experienced a substantial increase of 48.45 per cent in 2000 against 1999's US$254.92 million, equivalent to 7.72 per cent of city's total GDP (RMB40.59 billion or about US$4.902 billion) and 0.41 per cent of the total export value of Guangdong Province.

Export of primary goods came to US$84.12 million, accounting for 22.23 per cent of the total export value. Export of manufactured goods reached US$294.31 million, 77.77 per cent of the total export value. Exports were destined for 166 countries and regions (see Table 7.42.2).

The increase in the total import value was even greater than for export: a total of 60.27 per cent growth from US$492.38 million in 1999to US$789.08 million. The import value of primary goods and manufactured products amounted to US$555.84 million and US$233.19 million respectively, 70.45 per cent and 29.55 per cent of the total imports.

Imports came from 56 countries and regions (see Table 7.42.3). The key imports were crude oil, fertiliser, potassium chloride, raw cotton and steel scraps .
