A fertile soil and genial climate make Nantong one of China's major commodity grain producers . It also produces a rich assortment of farm and sideline produce, with its output of mulberry silk, peppermint and jute taking up a large percentage of the national total. The city has a well-developed fishery and aquaculture business as well as more than 120,000 hectares of beaches replete with marine resources.
