Gansu Province in north-western China is situated in the upper reaches of Yellow River. It shares a border with the People's Republic of Mongolia. The province is situated at the juncture of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Neimonggu (Inner Mongolia) Plateau and the lower highlands, all more than 1,000 metres above sea level. The total area is 454,430 square kilometres and the population 25.752 million. The provincial capital is Lanzhou. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.28.1.
