Yunnan is on China's southern border, facing Myanmar to the west and south-west and Laos and Vietnam to the south. The border of the country extends 4,000 kilometres. Hills and mountains account for 94 per cent of the total area and plains for 6 per cent. The province has a population of 42.874 million and the provincial capital is Kunming.
