Zhejiang is a coastal province in east China, covering an area of 101,800 square kilometres, 70 per cent of which are mountainous, 23 per cent plains and 6 per cent rivers and lakes. There are over 2,000 offshore islands. Zhejiang has a population of 46.134 million and the provincial capital is Hangzhou. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.11.1.
