Heilongjiang is in the northernmost part of China, bordered by Russia to the north and east. Some 60 per cent of its area consists of mountains and 30 per cent of plains. The topography of the province is characterized by dense forests and concentrated areas of plain. The total area is 469,000 square kilometres with a population of 38.110 million. The provincial capital is Harbin. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.8.1.
