Chapter 13. Preparing for the Pilot Deployment

 < Day Day Up >

With the successful completion of the POC, the project now moves into the pilot phase. During this phase, the foundation laid by the POC is expanded as the basis for the pilot. The pilot tests the biometric system in terms of scale and deployability . Depending on the size of the company, the pilot may need to be multi-phased. In a multi-phased pilot, the follow-on pilots involve more users and additional applications for integration.

In preparing for the pilot phase, the following steps need to occur:

  1. Define the group of stakeholders

  2. Put in place a project management team that can see the solution through to rollout

  3. Form and charter the pilot group

  4. Develop policy documents

  5. Summarize daily reports weekly and send them out

  6. Address and track problems and solutions as they occur

  7. Put a training plan in place

  8. Prepare audit and analysis reports

  9. Build and test an automated install

  10. Roll out the software and hardware in a practical manner

  11. Provide mechanisms for feedback

  12. After initial pilot rollout, get the executives involved

  13. Address issues of scalability and manageability for rollout

  14. Near the end of the pilot, discuss the next steps

  15. Wrap up the pilot

  16. Make a go/no go decision

  17. Build a transition book

As in the previous chapter, the examples of Martin and Jason will be used.
