67 About Bluetooth Security

Bluetooth enables you to connect wireless headsets and hands-free car kits to your BlackBerry device for the utmost in flexible wireless mobile communications. Similar to the main radio on your device that can be turned on and off to control voice and data wireless connectivity, your device's Bluetooth radio can also be turned on and off to control Bluetooth connectivity. All BlackBerry devices default to having their Bluetooth radios off, so you must turn it on before you can access your Bluetooth accessories. Even if you use a Bluetooth headset or hands-free car kit, you might want to turn off Bluetooth under some circumstances because it adds an unnecessary drain on your BlackBerry device's battery when not in use. If you don't plan on using a Bluetooth accessory with your BlackBerry device for more than an hour , for example, you might as well turn off Bluetooth and conserve some battery power.

1.
Open the Tools Screen

Scroll to the Tools icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Tools screen appears, displaying a list of tool options.

2.
Open the Settings Screen

Scroll to the Settings icon and click the trackwheel. A list of options for which you can change the settings appears.

TIP

Depending on your specific device, you might see a Bluetooth icon (looks kind of like a horizontal antenna on a blue background) on the Tools screen that provides direct access to enabling and disabling Bluetooth. This icon appears normal if Bluetooth is enabled; it has a no sign (a circle with a slash) around it if Bluetooth is disabled. If your device has this icon, ignore the remaining steps in this task and just click the icon with the trackwheel to enable and disable Bluetooth on your device.

Click once more to enable Bluetooth. The status at the top of the screen changes to show that Bluetooth is now enabled; any paired devices appear on the screen. If you haven't paired up with any other Bluetooth devices yet, the list is empty.

TIP

See 65 Pair Up with a Bluetooth Headset or Car Kit to find out how to pair your BlackBerry device with a Bluetooth headset or hands-free car kit.

Keep in mind that Bluetooth puts an additional strain on your device's batteries, so you should leave it on only if you actually plan to use it frequently.
