50 Install a New Application Over-the-Air

To be brutally honest, very few wireless networks are currently operating at fast enough speeds to do much useful in the way of networked multimedia. Networked multimedia involves transferring video, music, and even large images over a wireless network. Still, even considering current wireless bandwidth limitations, some wireless multimedia applications can be useful now. For example, monitoring remote cameras using your mobile device can be incredibly empowering. Whether you're checking the flow of traffic to decide on a route home or monitoring your home security while away on a trip, wireless video monitoring is an enticing way to get the most out of your BlackBerry device.

You can go about monitoring a remote camera feed in a variety of ways. One application is particularly flexible in providing access to remote cameras: Terratial LIVE by Terratial Technologies. This application allows you to use your BlackBerry device to tap into both traffic cams (SkipTraffic LIVE) and security cams (Surveillance LIVE). All Terratial's online monitoring services require a subscription and fee, but you can try the service free by simply downloading the Terratial LIVE software.

84. Monitor Traffic and Surveillance Remotely

1.
Download and Install the Terratial LIVE Application

To try the traffic and surveillance monitoring video features of the Terratial LIVE application, you must download and install the application to your device. Terratial LIVE is available as an over-the-air (OTA) download direct to your device from the Terratial website at http://www.terratial.com/downloads. Just visit this URL on your BlackBerry browser and follow the directions for downloading and installing the application. After you install Terratial LIVE, an icon is added to the Applications screen where you can launch the application.

2.
Open the Applications Screen

Scroll to the Applications icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Applications screen appears, showing a list of applications you can launch.

3.
Launch the Terratial LIVE Application

Scroll to the Terratial LIVE icon and click the trackwheel. The Terratial LIVE application launches and appears.

4.
Configure Your Network Settings

When the Terratial LIVE application first starts, it prompts you to enter network gateway settings for your specific wireless service provider. This information is required for the application to successfully access the wireless network and communicate with Terratial's servers that provide live camera images.

To configure the network settings for your particular wireless provider, click the trackwheel and select your service from the menu that appears. Click again, and the new settings are shown on the network settings screen. Click to open the menu once more and select Close and save settings to put the new network settings into effect. One more click enables the new settings and closes the Terratial LIVE application; closing and restarting the application is required for the settings to take effect.

Launch the Terratial LIVE application again, and you're ready to connect to the wireless network.

5.
Start Network Communications

To start network communications with the Terratial LIVE application, click the trackwheel, select Start network communications from the menu that appears, and click again. You are then connected to the Terratial servers and given access to live channels. In this scenario, a channel is simply a group of camera feeds. Click the trackwheel to open a menu that shows the channels. If you're trying the demo version of Terratial LIVE, you'll find only a few channels, including a traffic channel and an office surveillance channel.

NOTE

Some wireless service providers have limited their wireless Internet access for security purposes. You might have to enter configuration information on your device that is specific to your provider to have full Internet access, which is required for network-aware applications such as Terratial LIVE. The main piece of information you need is the access point name (APN) for your wireless provider, and possibly a username and password. Your provider should be able to provide you with this information, along with how to use it to enable full Internet access on your device.

6.
View Live Traffic Video

To view live traffic video, select the traffic channel from the menu and click. In the trial version of Terratial LIVE, the traffic channel is called AtlantaTrafficViews and it shows images from traffic cams in Atlanta, Georgia. Your device spends a few moments downloading several camera images and then shows them in sequence by transitioning from one to the next .

NOTES

If you're using the trial version of Terratial LIVE to try the application, you might not be shown actual live camera feeds. I noticed that most of the demo channels use archived images as opposed to live images for demonstration purposes.

Terratial's SkipTraffic LIVE service currently offers access to more than 1,500 traffic cams throughout the United States and many more in other countries . These traffic cams are organized according to your personal driving routes, so accessing them is made easy and intuitive.

7.
View Live Surveillance Video

To view live surveillance video, select the office surveillance channel on the menu and click. In the trial version of Terratial LIVE, this channel is called OfficeSurveillance and it shows images from an unspecified office cam. Your device spends a few moments downloading several camera images and then shows them in sequence by transitioning from one to the next.

NOTE

To view your own surveillance cams, you need to subscribe to Terratial's Surveillance LIVE subscription service. This service isn't cheap, at least not for a small officea 1-year subscription costs about $1,000, over and above the cost of the surveillance cameras.

8.
Exit the Application

Press the Escape button to exit the application. Press the Escape button again to navigate back to the Home screen, or just press the End key once to exit the application and return directly to the Home screen.
