Goals

Identify the file-sharing services available in Mac OS X

Manipulate the configuration choices for personal file sharing

Locate specific contents of the smb.conf file and test them using the testparm command

Differentiate between browsing for SMB services on Mac OS X and Windows

Access an SMB service running on Mac OS X from a Windows computer

Connect to a shared FTP volume on a Mac OS X computer from Windows and from UNIX and transfer files

Access FTP services from the command-line or using a Web browser


The last two lessons of this book focus on file sharing on Mac OS X. In this lesson, you'll learn about the three file-sharing services that Mac OS X provides, how to turn them on and off, and how to configure these services on your computer.

You will find out how to let users on other computers connect to yours using Apple Filing Protocol (AFP), Server Message Block (SMB), and File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and how to modify the behavior of the file-sharing service. Finally, you'll learn some monitoring and troubleshooting techniques.
