While Outlook remains the most popular choice to connect to Exchange mailboxes, Microsoft has encouraged other clients to connect to Exchange by supporting popular Internet protocols such as IMAP4 and POP3. Microsoft also has clients such as Outlook Express, Pocket Outlook, and the Macintosh clients that you can connect to Exchange; with Exchange 2003, we have a new set of smartphone and other mobile clients that can join the party.
Any large organization is likely to have a number of client platforms in operation, especially when you factor in mobile clients like the Pocket PC and other handheld devices. From an Exchange perspective, these are all just clients that funnel in to one place (the Store), but clearly it is a challenge for administrators to support the many different client types that users want to exploit. In this chapter, we look at the Internet and mobile clients and discuss some of the points you need to consider as you build corporate messaging environments.
