Updating Your Operating System

 <  Day Day Up  >

The last operating system upgrade to any of the VS-880/890 workstations came in 2002. The most current version of the operating system for these workstations is shown in Table 7.1.

During the startup sequence, the display on the VS workstation shows the version of the operating system. Unfortunately, it only shows the first two digits after the decimal point. For example, I'm running v2.014 on my VS-880EX, and the startup display shows v2.01. To see the actual version of the operating system, you need to boot up the VS in a special way.

With the workstation powered off, hold down the STATUS and SELECT buttons above track 1 and then power up the VS. The display will show the full version number, along with some other information, and will then proceed to boot as normal.

If you want to upgrade your operating system, you will first need to download the files from the Roland Web site. You can upgrade your operating system via MIDI or via a SCSI ZIP drive. There are specific download files for each of these, and there are specific files for PC and MAC. Be sure to read the instructions in the text file included with these download files.

If you are upgrading your operating system via MIDI, you can use a hardware sequencer or your computer. If you use your computer, be sure to also download the SMF player from the Roland Web site, as this will allow you to play the MIDI files to the VS. You'll also need the appropriate MIDI cable connected between your computer and your VS workstation. When you are ready to do the upgrade, you'll need to start up the VS in a special manner. With the workstation powered off, hold down the STATUS and SELECT buttons above track 7 and then power up the VS. The display will read System Update ? Press YES, and the VS will display Waiting MIDI EX. You'll now need to play the MIDI files through your sequencer or through the SMF player on your computer. There are 16 MIDI files, and they must be played in order. Again, see the instructions in the text file included with the download. When all the data has been transmitted and applied, the VS will prompt you to reboot.

If you are upgrading your operating system via a SCSI ZIP drive, be sure it is in fact a SCSI ZIP drive. Connecting a parallel-port ZIP drive to your VS workstation can cause damage to the ZIP drive and to the VS. You will also need to be able to connect the SCSI ZIP drive to your computer in order to copy the download files to the ZIP disk. If you are having problems performing this task, you can obtain a ZIP disk containing the necessary files from Roland. When you are ready to do the upgrade, verify that the SCSI ZIP drive is connected to the VS and powered up, then power up the VS. The display will read Update SysPrg Press YES, and the VS will begin reading the upgrade data from the SCSI ZIP drive. When all the data has been transmitted and applied, the VS will prompt you to reboot.

When you are ready to do the upgrade, you'll need to start up the VS in a special manner. With the workstation powered off, hold down the STATUS and SELECT buttons above track 7 and then power up the VS. The display will read System Update ? Press YES, and the VS will begin receiving the upgrade data from the MIDI port or from the SCSI ZIP drive.
