Automix is a function that allows you to create automated mixes . By using Automix, you can have the mixers change settings while a song is playing. When you create an Automix, the VS stores the changes you make to a variety of mixer settings. When you recall an Automix, all the changes are performed during playback, allowing you to listen to the mix exactly as you created it. Most VS workstations only allow you to save one Automix per song, but some allow multiple Automix versions per song.

Automix data can be created two different ways. The first is called Realtime Automix. As the name suggests, Realtime Automix records changes you make to the track faders and the track settings while the song plays. All your fader and parameter changes are recorded as Automix data. When you finish recording your Automix data, you can play back the song, and the VS will re-create all the fader and parameter changes you performed.

Another way to create Automix data is via snapshots. With Snapshot Automix, you can capture all your fader and parameter settings for a point in time. To do this, move to the point where you want to change your settings, make those changes, and then record those settings into Automix. Then move to the next point in time, make the appropriate changes, and record those settings into Automix. When you finish recording your Automix data, you can play back the song, and the VS will recall the appropriate settings at the appropriate point in time.

When using Snapshot Automix, you can also use gradation. Gradation allows you to create a smooth transition between 2 consecutive snapshots. For example, if you wanted to sweep a guitar from hard left to hard right, you could use gradation to perform a smooth sweep. Gradation can also be used for fade-ins and fade-outs.

The exact procedures for recording and playing back Automix data are workstation dependent. Additionally, some VS workstations allow you to edit, copy, move, and perform realtime punch-ins of your Automix data.
