TIP 74: Using OS X Services

We want to say up front that this tip is only for Mac users, but it's so cool we just had to put it in the book. If you're not familiar with OS X Services, they are system-wide features available in the application menu of most OS X software. To use a service, select some text in the Layout Editor or a file in the Site window and choose a service from the GoLive > Services menu (Figure 74).

Figure 74. Manipulate your selection with a variety of OS X Services.

There are a variety of services available, but some of the most practical uses include:

  • Open URL: Select a Web site address in the Layout Editor and open the URL in your default Web browser.

  • Search with Google: Use the selected text as a search at the world's most popular search engine.

  • Send File to Bluetooth Device: Select a file in the Site window, such as a SMIL presentation, an MPEG movie, or a JPEG, and transfer it to a wireless device. This only works if your Mac and device are Bluetooth-compatible.

  • Speech: Select text and let your Mac read it aloud to you. This is a fun way to "proofread" your writing.

  • Summarize: Select all the text in a page or paragraph and let your Mac summarize the text for you. This might be an easier way to write description meta tags.

  • Translate: Download the Translation Service from www.kavasoft.com/TranslationService/ and translate text back and forth among more than a dozen languages.
