TIP 64: Calculating Document Statistics

Do you ever wonder how long it will take for a certain page to download over a 56K connection? An ISDN line? A T1 connection? Open a Web page in GoLive and choose Special > Document Statistics to get a helpful estimate of download times at various connection speeds (Figure 64a).

Figure 64a. Document Statistics can help you decide whether your pages need to go on a diet.

The Document Statistics dialog shows you the size of your source code, your images, and the overall page size. Copy editors will appreciate the ability to get character and word count information for the selected page. At the bottom of the dialog is a list of estimated download times at different connection speeds. Lots of factors such as server load and Internet traffic can affect real-world performance, but these numbers should give you a good estimate.

Now you can get real-time Document Statistics on any Web page while you work. In the Status field at the bottom of the document window, choose to show Document Statistics, and now you'll see an accurate byte count of al the source code in your page (Figure 64b).

Figure 64b. GoLive CS2 now shows real-time statistics.
