TIP 132: Using Stationery

Anyone who has seen a stack of company letterhead will be familiar with the term stationery. If you take a piece of letterhead, type a letter on it, send it to your mom, and then subsequently redesign the letterhead, your mom's letter would remain unchanged. GoLive's stationery pages work precisely the same way.

Stationery vs. Templates

Stationery pages are great for those times when modifying the original should not affect pages that had been created from itfor example, a newsletter or archive. However, when you want to update multiple pages with ease, template pages are the best choice because any page created from a template will be updated to reflect changes made to the original file.

Design a stationery page as you would any other page, but instead of saving it into the Files tab of the Site window, save it into the Stationery folder. There are two easy ways to do this: Choose File > Save as and then choose Stationery from the Site Folder pop-up in the Save dialog box, or choose Save as > Stationery from the document's flyout menu.

Your new stationery file will appear in both the Stationery folder of the Extras tab in the Site window and in the Stationery section of the Library palette. To create a new page from stationery, do one of the following:

  • Drag the stationery file from the Stationery folder in the Extras tab or from the Stationery section of the Library palette and drop it into the Files tab of the Site window. A dialog box will ask if you want to move the file or create a new file. Choose Create, and a new page will be created and opened, ready for you to work on.

  • Double-click the stationery file in the Stationery folder of the Extras tab or from the Stationery section of the Library palette. A dialog box appears asking if you want to Create a new page or Modify the Stationery page. Click Create, and a new page based on the stationery opens. Be sure to name and save the page into your site (Figure 132).

Figure 132. Choose Create to make a new page based on the stationery, or choose Modify to change the stationery file itself.

If you would like to change the stationery file, double-click it and choose Modify. Make your changes and then save the file. None of the pages that were created from the stationery page will be affected by the modification of the original.
