American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and International Telecommunications Union Telecommunications Sector (ITU-T) are the two major standardization bodies that developed the Frame Relay standards. The Frame Relay Forum, a nonprofit organization established in 1991 with many equipment vendors as members, also contributed significantly to the standardization activities. The important ITU-T standards for frame relay are:
Architecture and service description: I.233
Datalink layer core aspects: I.922 Annex A
Switched virtual circuit management: Q.933
Permanent virtual circuit management: Q.933 Annex A
Congestion management: I.370
Frame Relay standards emerged out of the standardization activities of Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). ANSI, ITU-T, and the Frame Relay Forum are the major contributors to these standards.
