Normalization:
Normalization is the process of simplifying the structure of data. Denormalization is the opposite of Normalization. Normalization increases granularity and Denormalization decreases granularity. Granularity is the scope of a definition for any particular thing. The more granular a data model is the easier it becomes to manage, up to a point, depending of course on the application of the database model. OLTP databases generally perform well with much granularity. Data warehouses perform best with less normalization granularity, but often require more granularity with respect to detailed transactional histories.
