Section A.5. Welcome Center

A.5. Welcome Center

The first time you log into Vista (and every time thereafter until you turn off "Run at startup"), the Welcome Center appears. From this program, you can perform a number of post-installation tasks , including:

  • Connecting to the Internet (using a dial-up modem, cable modem/DSL connection, or wireless network).

  • Transfer files from your old computer (see "Windows Easy Transfer").

  • Register Windows Vista. That is, submit your name and address to Microsoft in hopes of getting sent valuable junk mail.

Note: Registering is not the same as activation (page 781). Registering is optional; activation is not (and does not entail surrendering your contact information).
  • Find out what's new, learn about the basics of Vista, and see some demos.

  • Add users to Vista. That means adding accounts to a PC that will be used by more than one person, as described in Chapter 23.

  • View computer details (this leads to a screen where you can join a domain network, as described in Chapter 25).

If you ever want to visit the Welcome Center when you haven't just started up, you can find it in Start All Programs Accessories.
