Reversing the B Clips for a Back and Forth Effect

Reversing the "B" Clips for a "Back and Forth" Effect

Now that we have our copies (to apply the Reverse Action effect to) and our originals (preserving the forward motion), we can apply the Reverse Action effect. Actually, you will not find a "Reverse Action" effect or anything like it in the Effects and Transitions panel. The Reverse Speed function is actually hidden in the Time Stretch dialog box. The Time Stretch dialog box is available by right-clicking the clip itself, and selecting Time Stretch, or by selecting Clip, Time Stretch from the Premiere Elements menu.

Apply the Reverse Effect

Right-click on the B1 clip, and from the contextual menu, select Time Stretch.

From the Time Stretch dialog box, click the Reverse Speed check box and click OK.

Right-click on the B2 clip, and select Time Stretch. Click the Reverse Speed check box and click OK.

If you want to optionally maintain the sound "as is," right-click the B1 clip again and from the contextual menu, select Time Stretch.

From the Time Stretch dialog box, click Maintain Audio Pitch and click OK.

Do the same for the B2 clip.

Did You Know?

You can keep the sound moving forward. One problem with reversing action (or adjusting speed) is that the sound also gets modified. If you choose to leave the sound unaltered using the Maintain Audio Pitch check box, keep in mind that doing so will put lip movement out of sync with speech. Also, if you choose to speed up your footage but keep the soundtrack "normal," the video of the clip will finish before the audio, thereby "clipping" the audio. For example, a child saying, "Dad, watch me slide down the slide!" in the unaltered clip may become, "Dad, watch…!" in the altered version. Or, for that matter (in reverse), "!...hctaw, daD".
