Retiming and Moving the Transported Man

We want, when the clip is playing, for the background (devoid of anyone appearing from out of nowhere) to appear on the screen for a few seconds to set the scene. Then, the transporter beam will appear, followed by the materialized man. To create this lag time, we'll simply shorten the timeframe for the still image clip, and then move it back so that it ends at the same time that the background clip ends.

Alter the transporterman.avi Clip

We want change the duration of the still image clip to 3 seconds, so move the CTI to the 3 second mark (00;00;03;00).

With your mouse, grab the tail end of the clip and drag it backwards until it lines up exactly with the CTI.

Next, click on the clip and drag it forwards until the tail of the clip lines up exactly with the tail of the transporterbackground.avi clip on the Video 1 track.

Did You Know?

You can also an change the duration of any clip using Time Stretch. To access the Time Stretch dialog box, right-click on the clip and select Time Stretch. Then, on the Time Stretch dialog box, adjust the value for the Duration. When you're all set, click OK. Time Stretch functionality is also available right on the Timeline. Just click the Time Stretch Tool button (it's there between the Selection Tool button and the Add DVD Scene button in the upper left) and use the tool to increase or decrease a clip's speed and duration simultaneously.
