Introduction

While Premiere Elements doesn't supply you with a push-button "old film" effect, it does give you almost limitless control over your clips to change brightness, contrast, and other properties over time. What it doesn't have is a "dust and scratches" filter. So as part of this project, we'll go and borrow those effects from Windows® Movie Maker, an entry-level video editing package included with Windows XP.

We will be applying a Movie Maker effect called, "Film Age, Old" to our clip. We will then save the clip and bring it into Premiere Elements 3 to complete the project. This lets us borrow the scratches, dust, and specks from Movie Maker. Then, by bringing the clip into Premiere Elements, we'll add bright spots over time to increase the illusion of faded film. By the way, if you prefer the more extreme fading, dust, and damage, there are two other Film Age effects in Movie Maker. By all means use them in your own projects.
