Appendix A: About the DVD-ROM

 < Day Day Up >

The Linux distribution DVD-ROM, Red Hat Fedora Core, is included in the book, featuring the complete six CD-ROM set for the entire Fedora Core distributions. The Red Hat Fedora Core Linux distribution installs a professional-level and very stable Linux system along with the KDE and GNOME GUI interfaces, flexible and easy-to-use system configuration tools, an extensive set of Internet servers, a variety of different multimedia applications, and over 1500 Linux applications of all kinds. The DVD also includes the complete set of source code files for all the Linux software provided, making up over 3GB of software overall. You can find recent information about Red Hat Fedora Project at fedora.redhat.com.

You will need a DVD-ROM drive on your computer to read the DVD-ROM disk. The DVD-ROM included with this book has been configured to be bootable, functioning like a boot CD-ROM. If your system supports bootable CD-ROMs, then it will boot from this DVD-ROM, letting you install your Red Hat system from the DVD-ROM directly.

Alternatively, you can also use a floppy drive to install Red Hat from the DVD-ROM. In this case, on a Windows, DOS, or Linux system, you will need to create an install floppy disk with the images/bootdsk.img file on the DVD-ROM (unless you are performing a network or hard disk installation). For details on how to create a boot floppy for the DVD-ROM see Chapter 2.

Note

The DVD-ROM installs packages directly in one continuous operation. In effect, the DVD-ROM is treated by the installation program as one very large CD-ROM, containing all needed packages.

The DVD contains a comprehensive set of Linux software applications including the GNU software packages (graphics, communications, publishing, editing, programming, games), as well as development tools and Internet servers (ftp, Web, mail, news, and DNS). Both GNOME and the K Desktop Environment (KDE) GUI user interfaces, along with an extensive number of GNOME and KDE applications, are included.
